Mega Millions jackpot increases to $1.1 billion for Tuesday's drawing (2024)

The Mega Millions jackpot has topped the magical billion-dollar mark, making it just the eighth U.S. jackpot ever to do so.

There was no winner in Friday night's drawing, so the jackpot for Tuesday, Aug. 1 was originally estimated at $1.05 billion but has increased to $1.1 billion based on sales, Mega Millions announced Tuesday.The cash option will be $550.2 million.

It is now the fourth largest Mega Millions and sixth largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever (see charts below).

The jackpot was last won on April 18 when someone in East Syracuse, New York won a $20 million jackpot and was also won on April 14 when a lottery player in Ozone Park, New York won a $483 million jackpot.

Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot is at $95 million for Wednesday night's drawing with a cash option of $48.1 million, according to the Powerball website.

Pennsylvania ticket wins $5 million

While no one matched all six numbers, five tickets matched the five white balls to win million-dollar prizes. A ticket sold in Pennsylvania had the Megaplier to win $5 million, while tickets sold in Arizona, New York and Pennsylvania won $1 million. A California ticket also won $1,502,965 because the state bases its second-tier prizes are based on actual sales in California.

How do I play Mega Millions?

The cost is $2 per ticket, but you can add the Megaplier for $1, which will increase the amount of your potential prize up to five times the original prize (except for the jackpot).

Each player selects five numbers from 1 to 70 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 25 for the Mega Ball. However, you can also have the lottery machine generate a random Quick Pick for you. You don't need to be a U.S. citizen or a resident a particular state where you purchase your ticket.
